The introduction smash of the extraordinary lidar technology on low-cost devices such as mobile phones is over. It is a reality and we love it !!

That little black dot on the side of the camera rig on the back of the smartphone is really empowering users to explore more and more opportunities to grasp reality.

Lidar stands for light detection and ranging: a synonymous of light sensing and metering. It works by bouncing lasers off objects to measure their distance, based on the time it takes for the light to return to the sensor. The reality can then be reconstructed though clouds of points. Eventually by measuring the intensity of the returning signal it can also provide interpretation capabilities.  Of course, the more waves of light the sensor sends out the more infrared dots are generated to reconstruct the object with higher resolution.

Lidar technology has been around for a long while and today is sprouting up everywhere.
It is used for self-driving cars, robotics, drones, smart city projects as well as augmented reality devices.

For basic users who want to take amazing images, that new little sensor on the smartphone adds depth scanning to evaluate the scene and get better photos. It can directly enhance portraits and even night shots.

Still, it can be more complicated as such when measuring speed of traveling light and intensity of pulses.  However, the future aims to take advantage of the capabilities of the Third Dimension to:

3D Localization

3D Scanning

3D Representation

3D Visualization

3D interpretation of data

Surveyors Love it !!

So far, either Airborne Lidar or Surveying Lidar have been expensive due to the technology itself and the cost of high-precision sensors and combined hardware devices such as inertial measurement units and GNSS systems. But Lidar could really help to take the representation and interpretation of reality down to less than centimeters quality especially in complex and difficult situations. And today, new approaches to technology and revolutionary tools are disrupting it. Step by step of course, but the trend is clear, and we can workout more to create our new business challenges.

The Swiss company Pix4d contributed to the disruption of photogrammetry applied to drone applications since the beginning. High tech solutions implemented through high scientific background to supply “simple to use tools” to clients finalize their jobs.

Today the challenge is to use lidar on smartphones to catch a photogrammetric model and share it in 3D for analysis purposes or Digital Twin Model Integrations.

The disruption continues by adding a GNSS-RTK device to have an improved accuracy down to centimeters.

  • At the moment we cannot pretend to survey or map a city with the mobile phone (yet), but the niche has been created.
  • A Smart Phone is a 3D Content Capture Tool.
  • We have more integration of high-quality devices into a professional workflow to even survey with quality small components of larger objects and integrate all in a unique 3D project.

The tail goes beyond the simple real world and move onward to support the Augmented and Virtual Reality industry. Imagine Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, Magic Leap, Qualcomm and others requiring advanced 3D maps of the world to layer virtual objects onto. Cool, isn’t?

What about our fancy daily life?

A smart phone with lidar capabilities boots the daily usage to a higher level.

Taking photographs with a Time-of-flight cameras improves focus accuracy and speed. It finalizes a better low-light focus and it is up to six times faster in low-light conditions. Not to mention the new mode effects that can be applied to portrait and night shots. Even more the measuring capabilities to measure seize of objects.
